Deep dive · Restaurants in Mumbai

What makes restaurants payroll in Mumbai genuinely different

A Mumbai restaurant payroll has three flavours of person on it: salaried managers (kitchen lead, FOH manager, accountant), hourly service staff (waiters, kitchen crew on shift wage), and tipped staff who get base + tip pool. They all live under the same Mumbai S&E Act, get Maharashtra PT deducted, and their salaries hit the same Form 24Q — but the calculation flow is completely different. StafFixHR runs all three from one tenant: per-shift attendance for hourly, monthly for salaried, automated tip-pool distribution based on shift hours, and the FNF settlement at exit accounts for tip-pool reconciliation up to the last shift.

Built-in workflows for restaurants

The five things StafFixHR ships out-of-the-box that generic HR software makes you build yourself.

Tip-pool distribution
Pool tips by outlet → distribute by shift hours each pay-cycle → reflect on payslip as a separate non-taxable line (tips are taxable; we just track separately for transparency)
Split-shift attendance
11 AM – 3 PM + 7 PM – 11 PM. Two punch windows per day, gross hours computed per shift, OT after the daily statutory cap
Per-outlet payroll roll-up
Three outlets in Bandra/Andheri/Powai? Each outlet has its own roster + cost centre, rolls up to one entity for the Mumbai S&E + GST + PT
Casual staff onboarding
Festive surge hiring (Diwali, Christmas) → 7-day onboarding sprint flow → casual employee class with reduced statutory (no PF if not regular)
Meals + accommodation perks
Free staff meals and (sometimes) on-premises accommodation are taxable perquisites — we mark them on Form 12BA at year end

Realistic monthly cost

Based on actual restaurants customer mix in Mumbai. Final number depends on plan tier + headcount.

Single outlet · 5-15 staff
₹3,500 – ₹7,000 / month
Self-serve, includes tip-pool + shift attendance
2-4 outlets · 20-60 staff
₹7,000 – ₹18,000 / month
Multi-outlet roll-up + per-outlet cost centre
5+ outlets / cloud kitchen
₹18,000 – ₹45,000 / month
Managed plan often makes sense — we run the multi-outlet payroll for you

Restaurants in Mumbai — common questions

Answers HR ops at restaurants actually search for.

Are tips taxable for my staff?
Tips are taxable as income under 'Salary' if pooled and disbursed through payroll (which is the cleanest path). We add the tip total to gross on the payslip, deduct TDS if applicable, and reflect on Form 16. Tips received directly in cash from customer to waiter are taxable in the waiter's hands but invisible to the employer — we don't try to reconstruct those.
How do I handle a waiter who works lunch only — half day?
Configure 'half-day shift' template with the lunch window (e.g. 11 AM–4 PM). Attendance flags half-day vs full-day; payroll computes daily wage at the half-day rate. PF + ESI applicability is checked at the FULL-month gross threshold, not per shift.
Service charge vs tips — are they different?
Yes. Service charge (10% added to bill) is restaurant revenue, not employee income. Distribute it however you like internally, but it's GST + income on the restaurant's books. Tips (voluntary) belong to staff. We keep both lines separate on payslip so finance + auditor see the trail.
Casual staff hired for Diwali week — do they need PF?
If employment is < 30 days continuous AND not a regular employee, PF is not mandatory under the EPF Act. Configure them under 'casual' class — no PF deducted, but Form 24Q still picks up their TDS. They get a Form 16A (TDS on non-salary) rather than Form 16.
Do you handle Mumbai S&E Act required registers (Form C, D, E)?
Yes — digital Form C (employee register), Form D (leave register), Form E (wages register) are maintained automatically from your payroll data. Print-ready PDFs for inspection. Maharashtra S&E inspectors accept the digital format.
Outlet manager moves between branches — how is payroll handled?
One employee, one personnel number; their 'posting' is updated when they move. Allowance rates follow the new posting from the effective date. Mid-month transfer pro-rates correctly without breaking salary history.
