What's actually different about running payroll in Mumbai

Mumbai's payroll quirk is geographic spread, not numbers. A typical 80-person SMB on our platform has employees split across BKC (corporate registered office), Andheri (sales team), Lower Parel (creative), and remote in Thane — Maharashtra PT applies uniformly, but city-allowance, transport-allowance, and HRA need to track each employee's actual posting. We pre-configure the HRA rate at 50% of basic for Mumbai (vs 40% for non-metros), so the Form 16 narrative reads correctly at year end.

Mumbai payroll — common questions

Answers HR ops folks actually search for.

How do you handle Maharashtra Professional Tax for split-month joiners?
PT is deducted in full only if gross for the month crosses ₹10,000. For mid-month joiners we pro-rate the gross check, so a joiner on the 20th of the month with ₹6,000 actual earned doesn't get hit. Reconciled in February (when the ₹300 slab kicks in to make the annual total ₹2,500).
Mumbai HRA rate — 40% or 50% of basic?
50%. Mumbai is one of the four metros (along with Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai) where the 50% cap on HRA exemption applies under Section 10(13A). We pre-fill 50% for any employee whose posting we know is Mumbai.
Does the system handle Shops & Establishments Act registration?
Yes for record-keeping — we maintain digital Form C (employee register), Form D (leave register), and Form E (wages register) as the Maharashtra S&E Act requires. Print-ready PDFs available for inspection.
Can I run payroll for Mumbai + Pune branches from one tenant?
Yes. Both are Maharashtra so the same PT rules apply, but per-employee allowance rates (HRA, city allowance) follow posting. Inter-branch transfers don't break the salary history.
What about Labour Welfare Fund deductions?
Maharashtra LWF: ₹25 (employee) + ₹75 (employer) deducted twice a year (June + December). Automated; shows on the June + December payslip as a separate line.
How do you handle Mumbai's monsoon work-from-home days?
Configure Mumbai-specific holidays (Mahalakshmi puja, Gudi Padwa) + add ad-hoc 'red flag day' WFH overrides without breaking attendance regularisation flow.
