Resume for Software Engineer (India, 2026)

Software-engineering roles in India see 200-400 applicants per opening at top product companies, and 50-80 at funded startups. Your resume has roughly six seconds to clear the human-eye filter, and an ATS keyword screen before that. The structure recruiters expect is well-defined: a one-line headline that names your stack, a 2-3 sentence summary anchored to impact, then experience with metric-led bullets — not job-description bullets.

What recruiters want to see

  • A clear headline naming your stack — "Senior Backend Engineer · Node + Postgres + AWS" — not generic "Software Engineer"
  • Bullets that lead with the action verb and end with the measurable impact ("Cut p99 latency from 1.8s → 240ms by introducing Redis-backed write-through caching")
  • Open-source links, repos, or published packages even if small — proves you ship
  • Specific scale numbers (QPS, MAU, dataset size, throughput) that match the role's ladder
  • 1-2 projects with live URLs — recruiters click these

Common rejection causes

  • Listing every technology you've touched in passing — ATS scores you on density, not breadth
  • Bullets that describe responsibilities ("Worked on backend services") instead of outcomes
  • Resume longer than one page for sub-8-year experience
  • Hiding GitHub / LinkedIn behind shortlinks recruiters can't paste into their ATS
  • Bullets without a single number anywhere — auto-rejected by hiring managers at FAANG-tier firms

Frequently asked questions

Should a software engineer resume be one page or two?+

One page for under 8 years of experience. Two pages only if you have publications, open-source maintenance, or distinct product cycles to show. Beyond two pages, recruiters skip — even staff engineers.

Do I list every technology I've used?+

No. List the ones you'd be comfortable being interviewed on. Listing tech you've touched once dilutes the keyword density and hurts your ATS score.

How important are open-source contributions?+

Very, but not at the cost of fabrication. One real PR merged into a known repo (or a 50-star side project) is worth more than 'contributor' badges on inactive repos.

Do I include CGPA on my resume?+

Yes if you graduated within the last 5 years AND it's above 7.5. After 5 years of experience, drop the CGPA — your work history matters more.

Should I write 'References available on request'?+

No. It's an old convention and wastes line space. Recruiters will ask if they need them.
